Mountain Biking Around Twin Lakes Trail

Updated: Jan 8, 2021

We were so excited for a much-anticipated weekend with great friends from our college days. It is hard to believe that it has been 30 years since we were all tooling around together, discovering what we wanted to do with our lives. Now we are adults that relish our times to meet up again and reconnect. Jonie and Garrett flew in from Portland, OR, and Vicki and Robbie, drove down from Big Sky, MT. We were all responsible and had our Covid tests taken before we saw each other so we could relax around each other with the confidence of negative results.

Our first adventure was to bike around Twin Lakes on the Twin Lakes Trail. It turned out to be a bit more of an experience than we were expecting! The looped trail is 14.8 miles of single-track that I would rate as blue intermediate with a few little places on the south side of the lake that I would give a blue+ rating.

It is always hard to predict the weather at 10,000+ feet elevation in September. It is hit or miss with sun or snow. We lucked out; the weather was absolutely perfect! Not only did we have warm sunshine, but the aspen leaves were in their prime.

A special bonus was exploring the historic Interlocken Resort. I had always heard about it, but it was somewhat of a mystery. I knew it for being a fancy resort built in the late 1800s that had closed for good in the 1950’s. It ended up being much larger of an area to explore than I had imagined. There is the Dexter Cabin, which you can explore inside, the main resort, which is boarded up, and plenty of outbuildings. It is so cool to see the well-preserved bones of such a historic relic!

We continued biking on the path through beautiful mountain creeks and stunning mountain vistas until we stopped for a drink and a snack at the Twin Lakes General Store before heading back to Leadville.

I would recommend this trail for a full day of biking and only if you have some experience under your belt.

Think about booking a stay at The Silver Rose of Leadville where you can adventure during the day and relax in luxury at night, https://www.silverroseleadville.com.
